2nd Grade Language Arts
This class is all about helping students develop an excitement for language arts. Each week, students expand their vocabularies and learn foundational grammar concepts, practicing writing correctly and using new words in context. Through reading together as a class, discussing readings, and producing creative projects, students deepen their reading comprehension and develop analytical skills. Students apply their mechanical and analytical skills each class in a variety of informal writing assignments.
Thematically, the course is divided into four quarters. The first quarter explores the different ways people use books and fairy tales. The second quarter focuses on poetry. The third quarter—which aligns with the annual AoPS Academy Short Story Contest—assesses how stories work, including a class reading of a chapter book. The final quarter introduces concepts of visual literacy.
What happens in class?
Each class lesson will be different, but at every meeting students will engage in the following activities:
- Complete a warm-up activity that sets the stage for concepts introduced in the week's lesson.
- Review foundational grammar concepts.
- Learn and apply new vocabulary words.
- Read together as a class and engage with the text through critical thinking and creative activities.
- Write responses to prompts in their creative writing textbook, Rip the Page!
Throughout the year, students will be expected to read independently in a book, or set of books, selected from the Grades 2-3 Recommended Reading list. Each week, students will respond to a prompt asking them to engage with their independent reading text. Homework is most often done by hand, as opposed to being submitted on the website.
Students will receive constant informal feedback from the teacher, both written and verbal. The goal of informal feedback in this course is to encourage students and make sure they are internalizing the concepts rather than to provide assessment. Formal feedback will be provided in response to the exams.
Students will take an exam during class at the end of each quarter, weeks: 9, 18, 27, and 36. Each exam will assess students on the reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary covered that quarter.
