Writing Camp 4–5: Playwrights Studio

In this upper-elementary language arts course, students practice advanced creative writing techniques while building reading comprehension and verbal presentation skills. Through the close study of an acclaimed play, students analyze plot structure and character development in preparation for crafting their own original scripts. Daily improv games help students build their confidence for presenting their scripts to an audience of their peers, a successful method to accelerate students' creativity and language skills.

Class Experience

Each class is divided into three major components:

  • A theatrical read-aloud of the course text, followed by a high-level discussion centered around the topic of the day.
  • An improv game and group writing challenge.
  • A writer's workshop where students independently develop their writing and have the opportunity to work directly with the teacher.

The course culminates in an exhibition of students’ work—an opportunity for students to apply their communication skills and bring their writing to life in an exciting, shared performance.
