Each unit of Language Arts Level 4 explores a communication problem that students must solve. They sharpen their critical thinking and writing abilities, using both fiction and nonfiction materials to deepen their understanding and evaluation skills. They progress through stages of independent planning, research, and responsive writing, culminating in a final presentation.
In the first unit, students develop their narrative writing skills by analyzing Revolutionary-period texts and crafting a humorous, one-act play that articulates a clear Loyalist or Patriot viewpoint.
In the second unit, students travel to the Civil War era to study evidence-based expository essays to write a live “documentary” presentation using a well-defined thesis statement and clear supporting ideas.
In the third unit, students move to the American suffrage movement – mining their riches to learn about author’s point of view and different methods of persuasion – to develop a proposal to memorialize a chosen historical figure.
In the fourth unit, students read and analyze a work of poetic memoir to write their own personal narratives, thereby contributing to a collective “history” of their class’s lifetimes.
