Academic Essay Toolkit offers an intensive study of academic writing at the high school level and beyond. This summer course focuses on the mechanics and process of composition, while also framing the academic essay as part of a larger conversation being held among scholars. Students walk away from this course with a deeper understanding of not only how to construct an essay but why the genre exists as it does, and a readiness to engage in that conversation throughout their academic careers.

In the first week of the course, students explore one of the "moves" from They Say / I Say, investigating its structure, function and applications before practicing with it in their own writing. In the second week, students use their new toolbox to plan, outline, draft, and revise a complete essay on a topic of their choice.
