Writing Camp 7–8: Mock Trial

This dynamic summer course seamlessly blends courtroom excitement with the academic rigor of an advanced language arts course. Centered around the Newbery Honor Book Nothing But the Truth, students strengthen their critical thinking, reading, writing, and public speaking skills. In the first week, students will analyze the underlying ramifications of the novel, putting it into conversation with the U.S. justice system. The second week immerses students in a simulated civil court case, culminating in a riveting trial where they showcase newfound public speaking prowess.

Class Experience

Each class includes the following elements:

  • An introduction to a new legal topic, followed by a high-level discussion centered around the topic of the day.
  • A discussion or debate based on the course text or an exemplary legal case students read in class.
  • An exciting game based on the legal topic of the day.
  • A collaborative writing exercise for students to prepare and practice their roles in the class’s mock trial.

The course culminates with students drawing on their analytic skills and legal knowledge they accumulated for a mock trial.
